How long should I wait to get STI testing after unprotected sex?

After having unprotected sex, especially with a partner you are concerned about, it may be tempting to rush into a medical clinic to get tested for STIs. Your distress and desire for answers are valid. However, it is just as essential to get accurate STI results as it is to get timely results.

A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is a virus, bacteria, or parasite passed from one person to another through vaginal, oral, and anal sex. There are many STIs, such as chlamydia, trichomoniasis, and gonorrhea. Some symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection are burning, itching, bad odor, or an abnormal amount of discharge. However, it is possible to have an STI without symptoms. In fact, you are able to pass on a sexually transmitted infection to another person while you do not have symptoms. You should test for STIs regularly, especially if you have a new sexual partner or a sexual encounter you are concerned about.

If you believe you have an STI, it is critical to abstain from having sexual activity until you are able to get tested. The longer you wait to be tested, the more severe symptoms can become and the more you risk passing on a possible STI. If a sexually transmitted infection is allowed to continue without treatment, more serious complications, including pelvic inflammatory disease, may result.

For the most accurate STI results, the CDC recommends waiting two weeks after sex before being tested. It may be anxiety-inducing to wait after a sexual encounter you are concerned about; however, it is important to wait for the full duration of time. If you are tested too early, it may give you a false negative.

What can I do while I wait?

  • Take a deep breath, and don’t panic. In a state of anxiety, we often think of the worst-case scenario. There are resources available to you regardless of the test result.
  • Reflect, journal, or talk through your feelings. Try not to bottle up your emotions.
  • Reflect on the choices that you have made and if you would like to make any different choices in the future about your sexual health. Ask yourself questions: “Am I aware of the risks of hooking up with multiple partners?” or “Do I feel pressured to hook up or be regretful afterwards?” You are worthy of a healthy, lasting relationship.

The most important thing is to schedule an appointment to be tested. At AVA Care, we offer you STI testing and treatment at no cost to you. We believe every woman should feel confident and empowered to make smart choices regarding their sexual health.

Understanding abortion laws in Virginia Navigating reproductive health care can feel overwhelming, especially as laws and regulations vary from state to state. In Virginia, abortion remains legal with certain restrictions in place. Whether you're seeking information for yourself or someone you care about, understanding the current legal landscape can support informed and confident decision-making. If you’re considering abortion , AVA Care of Harrisonburg provides ultrasound services and information on abortion at no cost to you. Current abortion laws in Virginia Abortion is legal in Virginia, but it is subject to some restrictions. The following policies are currently in effect: Abortion is prohibited in the third trimester, except when continuation of the pregnancy is likely to result in the death of the pregnant individual or substantially impair their physical or mental health, as certified by physicians. Parental consent and parental notice are required for minors seeking an abortion. State Medicaid coverage of abortion is limited and only available in specific circumstances, such as when the pregnancy endangers the life of the individual or results from rape or incest. Qualified health care professionals, including certain advanced practice clinicians, are permitted by state law to provide abortion care—not just physicians. Virginia law includes patient privacy protections for individuals seeking reproductive health services. Miscarriage care is not the same as abortion care It’s important to clarify that abortion laws or policies do not restrict access to medical care for miscarriage. A miscarriage, also known as spontaneous pregnancy loss, is medically and legally distinct from abortion. Miscarriage care remains fully legal and available across the state. Unfortunately, misinformation has led some to believe that access to emergency care for miscarriage may be affected by abortion laws. This is not the case. Miscarriage can involve serious health risks, and hospitals and medical providers are both equipped and permitted to offer the necessary care. If you or someone you know is experiencing signs of a miscarriage, it’s essential to seek medical attention without delay. Parental consent and provider guidelines Minors seeking an abortion in Virginia must have both parental consent and parental notice.
